About Delfeayo Marsalis

New Orleans native Delfeayo Marsalis has been performing on trombone since age 13 and producing records since he was 17, and he has won numerous awards for both.

As a trombonist, Delfeayo has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach, as well as touring with his own modern jazz ensemble. A mainstay on the New Orleans modern jazz scene, he has released three solo albums to critical acclaim, Pontius Pilate’s Decision in 1992, Musashi in 1997, and Minions Dominion in September 2006.

Delfeayo has been involved with educating youth in various developmental programs for several years, serving as director of the Foundation for Artistic and Musical Excellence summer program in Lawrenceville, NJ from 1998 to 2002.  He also founded Uptown Music Theatre.  Each year, Uptown Music Theatre commissions an original children’s musical. Since 2000, UMT has created a body of work that presents fresh, contemporary themes in family entertainment that are uplifting and educational.

On January 18, 2011, Troubadour Jass Records will release Delfeayo Marsalis’ Sweet Thunder (Duke & Shak), newly orchestrated tunes from Duke Ellington’s Shakespeare Suite. The New Orleans based non-profit Uptown Music Theatre will present Mr. Marsalis’ tour named Sweet Thunder.  Sweet Thunder is a theatrical jazz production that pairs William Shakespeare’s wonderfully poetic words with Duke Ellington’s unparalleled jazz compositions in a unique collaboration.
